Introduction
The Institute of Internal Auditors Papua New Guinea (IIA PNG) is the national professional body dedicated to advancing the internal audit profession. Since its formation, the Institute has provided a platform for auditors, risk managers, and compliance professionals to strengthen governance, accountability, and ethical standards across the country.

First Meeting – 2000
On 19th September 2000, a group of professionals gathered at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Port Moresby, and agreed to form a Steering Committee to oversee the establishment of an IIA Chapter in Papua New Guinea.

Special Meeting – 2004
On 21st April 2004, a special meeting was convened at the Holiday Inn, Waigani, chaired by Mr. Bill Henderson, IIA Australia Representative. At this meeting, 40 prospective members voted unanimously to take the next step towards the ultimate formation of IIA PNG.

​​Global Recognition
November 2003 – The Steering Committee submitted a formal proposal to IIA Global for PNG to be recognised as a “Prospective Chapter.”
December 2003 – IIA Global approved the proposal, granting PNG a one-year timeframe before full affiliation.
25th June 2004 – The IIA Global Board officially recognised PNG as an Affiliated Chapter of IIA Global.
Legacy and Growth
25th July 2007 – IIA PNG held its first Annual General Meeting (AGM), where members elected the first official Board of Office Bearers.
Since then, IIA PNG has grown into a recognised pillar of trust, accountability, and professional excellence across both public and private sectors in Papua New Guinea.
The Institute continues to provide seminars, conferences, and professional development opportunities to strengthen the role of internal auditors, risk managers, and compliance practitioners.
